(6) How many times have you been able to come consecutively, without leaving the room?
YVES TANGUY Six times (between ten in the evening and eleven in the morning, when I was twenty-two).
ANDRÉ THIRION Four times (in one night, at twenty-two).
ANDRÉ BRETON Four or five times (at thirty-two, in the space of fourteen hours).
NUSCH Five times (between midnight and eleven in the morning, at twenty-three-and-a-half).
ALBERT VALENTIN Twice (in one night, at twenty-seven).
ANDRÉ BRETON I admire Valentin’s answer, if he’s not joking.
PIERRE UNIK Five times (between eleven at night and ten in the morning, at nineteen).
JEANNETTE TANGUY Four times (between nine and eleven years old, between nine o’clock and eleven o’clock).
PAUL ELUARD I’m ashamed. Eleven times.
You’re going to laugh at me again. I’m thirty-five. Which should make you think. Eleven times in normal circumstances. Seven times with a woman who had her period. Eleven times when I was twenty between nine in the evening and one in the afternoon.
ANDRÉ BRETON I’d like to come back to my initial question. I would like to know what a man does when he thinks the woman has come, or hasn’t come.
ANDRÉ THIRION In the best circumstances (with someone I particularly like) I can go on until the woman comes.
YVES TANGUY I can’t think of anything more annoying.
ANDRÉ BRETON Can you carry on?
YVES TANGUY A few times I have.
PIERRE UNIK I’m at a loss to know what to do. I’ve always had the impression that women came before I did.
ANDRÉ BRETON Why are you at a loss? Is the impediment2 mental or physical?
PIERRE UNIK It has always seemed impossible to me. To go on, that is.
ANDRÉ BRETON It fills me with despair, but I see no solution to the problem.
PAUL ELUARD I entirely approve of Unik’s optimism.
ANDRÉ BRETON And I disapprove of it.
PAUL ELUARD At present, at any rate, I can delay my orgasm long enough to feel that I respond to the woman’s inevitable signs of pleasure. My pessimism has never allowed me to imagine complete openness in sexual relations. When I was young I could also continue to be active after coming. Now that’s almost impossible, but in consequence I take much longer to reach orgasm than I did then, and – despite my pessimism – I have never had the slightest inclination to imagine that the woman who showed me she was satisfied had not in fact had an orgasm.
ANDRÉ BRETON As far as I’m concerned, my optimism on sexual matters does not stop me thinking that the signs of passion you refer to are not only not inevitable but, insofar as they correspond to a reality, can be equivocal. Even when I was younger, I was never able to continue sexual activity without any ill effects after reaching orgasm. In the end I accepted that it was beyond me. If I tried, the result would be the sort of physical discomfort in the abdomen in face of which I refuse to imagine anything whatsoever.
ANDRÉ THIRION I am unable to make love with someone I think is faking.
